Oceanic Global: Ancient Wisdom and the Ocean, an Earth Day Event
For Earth Week 2021, Oceanic Global hosted Ancient Wisdom and the Ocean—a virtual gathering which amplified traditional, indigenous, and local knowledge from around the world & the importance of blending it with modern science to create holistic, long-term solutions for protecting our blue planet.
The ocean is our oldest and most vital treasure. It regulates our climate and sustains all life on earth - but modern society is no longer living in a way that sustains the ocean in return. Coastal communities are some of the most vulnerable to climate change, and by living in harmony with the environment and harnessing generations of collective wisdom, indigenous peoples have proven to be the best guardians of their traditional territories and the planet’s ecosystems: it is critical that we listen to and learn from their example of resiliency.
For Earth Week 2021, Oceanic Global hosted Ancient Wisdom and the Ocean —a virtual gathering which amplified traditional, indigenous, and local knowledge from around the world & the importance of blending it with modern science to create holistic, long-term solutions for protecting our blue planet.
The gathering was hosted by actress and activist Nathalie Kelley and included four discussion circles—led by global community leaders, field experts, and representatives from EcoResolution, Seeding Sovereignty, and the United Nations Division of Law and the Sea—across the themes: protecting marine areas, fisheries, climate resiliency, and oceanic biodiversity.
As well as participating in the event, EcoResolution partnered with Oceanic Global to help disperse educational and promotional materials. You can watch the full event on Oceanic Global’s YouTube channel here. For balanced ecosystems we must listen to indigenous and coastal communities, because when the ocean thrives, all life thrives along with it.
